The Gifted and Talented Program for the Skiatook School System is designed to meet the educational needs of those students who have been identified, by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, as Gifted and/or Talented. Skiatook currently uses the CogAt, to identify students who score in the top 3% as gifted. These tests are given to all 3rd grade students in their fall semester, 8th grade students in their spring semester, and to all students who enter our system and do not have a test score on file from a previous school. The tests may also be given to any student, with permission from a parent, at any time, by parent, student, or teacher request. Other methods of identification include referrals by teachers using the district matrix criteria, which includes classroom performance, leadership, artistic excellence in the fine arts areas, specific academic abilities in one or more subject areas, and state criterion reference scores.
Elementary Gifted and Talented
Students in Pre-K -2nd grade are served through enrichment activities in the regular classroom, computer programs, library, music and art classes. The regular classroom uses whole class enrichment and schedules many guest speakers throughout the year.
All students identified in 3rd-5th grades are served in a once a week pull-out program by the Gifted Director. Some of the topics students will focus on include: third grade will study geography and learning the 50 states and capitals, fourth grade will enhance their writing skills through reports or science units, while 5th grade will have independent projects expanding their writing, research, and public speaking skills. All three grades utilize the Time Magazine for Kids to study current events. All teachers are instructed to differentiate curriculum in the regular classroom to meet the needs of individual students.
Secondary Gifted and Talented
Students in 7th -12 grades are served in advanced classes at the Middle School, Honors and Advanced Placement classes at the High School, in addition to academic competitions, art, music, and Student Council.
