It’s Teacher Appreciation Week!!
Teachers – the people who educate us and give us the vital knowledge which we need to live our lives. They encourage, support, discipline and prepare us for the road ahead and now it’s time for us to show them our appreciation. Teacher Appreciation Week begins on the 7th until the 11th of May 2012, which will be the perfect opportunity for us to show teachers how thankful we are for their support. So boys and girls, it’s time for us to demonstrate how much our teachers mean to us, let’s all say a big thank you to the people who work really hard so that we can have a better future!

Mr. Parker goes to Washington!
As a part of his recognition as the 2012 Oklahoma Assistant Principal of the Year, Mr. Will Parker visited Washington D.C. April 16-20 to represent Skiatook High School and the state of Oklahoma at the National Association of Secondary School Principal’s event and awards ceremony. While there, he met with U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (see photo) as well as U.S. Senator Tom Coburn to discuss federal legislative items that may affect education in Oklahoma. Mr. Parker also collaborated with assistant principal winners from other states to hear of their best practices. NASSP and their sponsor Virco, honored all state winners at an awards ceremony Friday, April 19. Mr. Parker’s wife, Melissa, and their four children Emily, Mattie, Katie, and Jack also attended the event.
Skiatook students receive Arts Honors!!
The awards were presented at the Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma in Guthrie in a ceremony lead by Ken Busby of the Tulsa Arts and Humanities Council, Janet Barresi the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Brad Benson president of the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education. The awards are an affiliate of The Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network. Skiatook has had students receive at least one State Superintendent’s Arts Award for each of the past ten years.
Asthma Management Grant received
Our school nurses have received a grant from the Skiatook Public Schools Support Foundation that is funding a program to assist with asthma management in our school district. We will begin implementing this program at Marrs Elementary first. The nurses will use the new equipment to assess asthma status of students. Student’s that require asthma medication at school will have Peek Flow readings and Forces Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) monitored . This information will be recorded and sent home to give to the student’s physician. The physician will use this information to place students on an asthma action plan. This plan provides the school with information on how to treat asthma symptoms while in school and will also reduce the occurrence of asthma attacks if used routinely to monitor respiratory status at home. The school nurses will require that all students that have asthma medication at school be placed on an asthma action plan. The nurses strongly feel that this will help dramatically with ensuring that our students that have asthma have symptoms well controlled so they can learn and excel in school.
