Child Nutrition Services
As a partner in the education process of children, it is the mission of Child Nutrition Services (CNS) to provide nutritious, economical, appealing meals to all children while complying with local, state and national regulations.
In 1946 Congress passed the National School Lunch Act which was enacted as a grant-in-aid program to safeguard the health of children. This act was brought on because many soldiers failed physicals during World War II due to nutrition-related problems. In 1969 the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health led to subsidized reimbursable meals for low-income students. In 1975 Congress authorized the School Breakfast Program.
The Skiatook Public Schools (SPS), Child Nutrition Services Department operates under signed agreements with the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Department of Human Services. The National School Lunch and National School Breakfast Programs are administered by the United States Department of Agriculture. The Child Nutrition Services Department of the Skiatook Public School District serves approximately 400 breakfast meals and approximately 1400 lunches each school day. A total of 297,505 nutritious breakfast and lunch meals were served to children in the Skiatook School District last year.
Child Nutrition Services Department employs 30 individuals working approximately 600 hours. Our employees are dedicated to a partnership supporting the educational and performance objectives of the district. Through CNS, over $1 million dollars get funneled into the economy by way of salaries, food, services and equipment purchases.
